Cuisinart Brownies

  • 3 squares unsweetened baking chocolate, chopped
  • 1 ½ cups sugar, divided
  • 1 stick unsalted butter, melted
  • 3 large eggs
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla
  • ¾ walnut pieces, optional
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • ¾ teaspoon baking powder

Adjust oven rack to center position and preheat oven to 375 degrees. Butter and flour a 9-inch square baking pan.

With metal blade in place, add chocolate to bowl of food processor, and pulse on and off 6 to 10 times. Add 3/4 cup sugar and process until chocolate is as fine as the sugar, about 60 seconds.

Melt butter over low heat. With machine running, pour warm butter through feed tube and process until well-creamed and moist, about 8 seconds. Add remaining 3/4 cup sugar, eggs, salt and vanilla. Process until well-blended, about 60 seconds. Add nuts and pulse on and off twice. Add flour and baking powder. Pulse on and off only until flour disappears. Do not overprocess.

Spoon batter into prepared pan. Bake on center rack in preheated oven for 15 minutes. Reduce heat to 350 degrees and bake for an additional 20 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Remove from oven and cool on wire rack. Cut into 1 1/2 inch squares. Makes 36 brownies.
